Generation and Selection of Transgenic Olive Plants

[Abstract]  Olive (Olea europaea L.) is one of the most important oil crops in the Mediterranean basin. Biotechnological improvement of this species is hampered by the recalcitrant nature of olive tissue to regenerate in vitro. In previous investigations, our group has developed a reliable Agrobacterium-mediated transformation protocol using olive somatic embryos as explants (Torreblanca et al., 2010). [Abstract]  Ginseng refers to species within the genus Panax and is a slow-growing perennial herb from the Araliaceae family. The most widely used Panax species is Panax ginseng Meyer (Korean ginseng). Panax japonicus (Japanese ginseng), Panax notoginseng (Chinese ginseng), and Panax quinquefolium (American ginseng). Due to the various pharmaceutical importance of ginsenosides, ginseng plant has been cultivated for its highly valued root over 2,000 years as a medicinal plant in East Asian countries particularly in China, Korea, and Japan and North America. Genetic modification of strawberry would though be a promising alternative for obtaining the desired improvements in existing elite strawberry cultivars (Schaart et al., 2011). The availability of suitable genes for trait improvements in strawberry has however been a rate-limiting step until recently, but with the completion of the sequencing of the genome of woodland strawberry (F. vesca) (Shualev et al., 2011), we now have access to a treasure chest with valuable candidate genes.
